NASDO’s Volunteer Role in Jowhar’s Mass MUAC Screening

NASDO volunteers played a crucial role in the Mass MUAC Screening in Jowhar IDP camps, held from June 4th to 12th, 2024. Our efforts aimed to improve nutrition service coverage and early detection of malnutrition among children and mothers.

Background:

From April to May 2024, Jowhar district experienced severe impacts from the Gu rains, affecting 7,000 people and displacing 6,900 due to flash floods. This has worsened access to healthcare and nutrition services, posing a high risk of severe cholera outbreaks.

Our Volunteer Achievements:

– Conducted extensive training for screeners and supervisors, ensuring accurate MUAC measurements and effective data collection.
– Collaborated with partners like IMC, Aid Vision, WVI, SAACID, ARD, Mercy USA, and WARDI to reach over 3,854 children, identifying 658 with moderate and severe wasting.
– Increased community engagement and awareness, improving access to nutritional support services.

Looking Ahead:

NASDO volunteers are committed to enhancing nutrition services in Somalia. We expect beneficiaries to appreciate our efforts as we work to reduce the incidence of acute malnutrition and improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
